Castañas stands for chestnuts in Spanish and is interpreted here as a usable sculpture made of a series of cups. These tower- like sculptures are inspired by the traditional Russian Matryoshka dolls. Castañas is a Spanish interpretation of cups that can either be arranged vertically or on top of each other. The vessels become sculpture, facing inwards, playing with balance, generating a series of beautiful forms that also serve as vessels. Handmade in Oaxaca, a state rich in pre-hispanic pottery tradition, the Barro Negro -black clay- style has a tactile finish with a subtle shine.
