Atl denotes water in the Nahuatl dialect of the Aztec civilization. This piece is designed as a vase crafted from volcanic stone and black clay. Its plain shape is based on pre-Hispanic decorative stonework from Jalisco, Mexico. This collection of vessels combines stone and clay to create a symbiotic environment for plants and water, examining the link between these two natural elements. This pairing of natural materials in the Mexican countryside pays homage to the roles of different vessel types seen in daily life of the prehispanic people – humble, ordinary domestic items with an intimate connection to their lands.
