Zoomorphic masks symbolise man's confrontation with his animal traits. In addition to the important n'gon monkey mask several animals are represented in Malian communities, such as the lion or the hyena, also known as suruku.
This N'gon mask is from Bamana Koulikoro, located in western Mali. The long, simplistic line depicts an abstract monkey showing its traditional geometrically shaped face, with prominent, elongated eyes and chin. This unadorned mask originates from the Bambara people of Mali.
