Jojo Corväiá’s TEPHRA series is inspired by fragmental materials produced by volcanic eruptions. Once those clasts have fallen to the ground, they remain as TEPHRA with extraordinary shapes. Aspects of this brutalistic work include roughness, irregularity, an appreciation for the natural process of expression. “I recognize and adopt the anomalies arising from the practice of hand-building, which adds uniqueness shape, beauty, and a particular character. My main tools are my hands, and this gives me the opportunity to get intimate with the work. With these ceramic series, I relate to a perception that transcends appearance, and to rather enter into the territory of feelings. The material I use to build these sculptural pieces is a combination of Volcanic Clay from Lanzarote, Spain; Alumina, and in some cases a glaze with gold finishing.”
