The largest indigenous population in the Timor Islands is the Atoni tribe - renowned for their flamboyant weavings and carved wooden figurines depicting their ancestors. These statues symbolise the contact maintained between life on earth and the afterlife. A connection that allows the ancestors to guard the grave of a deceased person so that he or she is not disturbed during the journey to the afterlife.
